Smith, Josephine Anne

International Portrait and Wildlife Artist

Josephine Anne Smith was born in North London, England. She is a direct descendant of Holman Hunt, the founder of the Pre Raphaelite Brotherhood of Artists and has always loved to paint and draw.

At a very early age she developed a talent for capturing an accurate likeness of her models and received her training at the Ealing College of Art, West London. Subsequently her paintings were exhibited at Grosvenor St. Gallery, London and published by leading Publishing Houses Solomon and Whitehead and Felix Rosensteil’s Widow and Son, London. At this time she was commissioned to paint miniature portraits of all 90 of the Popes in office from 1198 to 1974 including the late Pope Paul II.

Josephine emigrated to Australia in 1984 and 2 years later she held her first solo exhibition which was a complete sell out, since then she has had numerous equally successful exhibitions.

Her portraits can be found in private collections in USA, Canada, England, Japan and Australia where she was also commissioned to paint various retiring Chairmen of the North Sydney Rugby Leagues Club. A member of numerous Art Societies in Australia, Canada and USA she has won many Awards in these countries.

Working in Oil, Pastel and Gouache she has been commissioned for Calendars and book illustrations. In addition to her portrayal of traditional portraits Josephine has received international acclaim for her attention to fine detail and sympathetic interpretation in Animal Portraiture. This has resulted in her acceptance as one of Australian best selling leading artists.
