ARTIST STATEMENT:
Miriam began her art studies at Sydney College of the Arts and is continuing under Daniel E. Greene (NYC) and Northern Light Studio (St. Louis) – Specialising in historic oil painting techniques of Rembrandt & Caravaggio.
Recently, she has attracted attention for her depiction of Jesus Christ as a black boxer — with a personal critique by Dr. James Romaine, a New York based art historian and co-founder of the New York Centre for Arts and Media Studies (NYCAMS), a program of Bethel University. He stated before their lengthy phone call – “I would enjoy looking at and talking with you about your work. I looked briefly on line and found some of your work. I was impressed with your drawing and knowledge of anatomy (something that is not always found in contemporary figurative art).”
Miriam is the first Australian artist to win the 2009 Faith & Form/IFRAA Design Award for “Stations of the Cross”• Winner Religious Art – Visual Arts. The 2010 National Convention of the American Institute of Architects in Miami June 10 – 12 will exhibit her award winning entry.
Within a year of launching her first series of paintings, ‘White Rope’ (2005), she achieved award winning international status. Winner at the Fifth Annual International Biennial of Contemporary Art in Florence, Italy (painting) and Artoteque, London (painting). She held exhibitions in Sydney, Barcelona and Florence in 2006. Miriam was featured in the Australian Institute of Export magazine “Dynamic Export”: a feature article covering ‘her amazing achievements in art and business’ (Issue Feb 06).
To celebrate the 400th Anniversary of Caravaggio’s Death (1610-2010). Miriam launched – Atelier Master School. This specialised and exceptionally structured school offers Innovative workshops and private instruction dedicated to Caravaggio’s Oil Painting Techniques. The Three-Term oil painting Course is designed for beginners, intermediate and advanced artists. Course includes a live model, set and costume – holding the pose of a Caravaggio Masterpiece. COMMISSIONS:
I offer my models/subject four styles and techniques to choose from:
A: CHIAROSCURO – Caravaggio historical oil painting technique eg ‘The Betrayal’, ‘Dying Slave’.
B: TRADITIONAL – using soundly layered historical 16th to 19th century oil painting techniques eg ‘Andrew’, ‘Self Portrait’.
C: FAUVIST – eg ‘Jermaine’ series
D: Glazing – a geometric methodically laid grid is juxtaposed with drips of paint. I construct the works with a limited palette of three to four colours, glazing transparent layers that embed the drips in the figure, yet the vibrancy and intensity is far from minimal eg ‘White Rope’ series,

A few Reviews on Miriam Cabello’s work: please view website Pressroom for more.
“Miriam Cabello is an artist whose life and work comes together with such giftedness that it will always be hard to match that day when it was joined with our lives.”
Rev. Dr. Dorothy McRae-McMahon
“In her Stations of the Cross, Miriam Cabello makes us look into the faces of other human beings and see there realities that will leave us without words – just the questions and the emotions which are held in the depths of the search for truth.”
The art of Miriam Cabello, Feature, Art and the inner life. A conversation with Miriam Cabello, by Rev. Dr. Dorothy McRae-McMahon, The South Sydney Herald, Page 14, September 2008 (Volume One Number Sixty-Four)
“Miriam is a committed professional artist. I have had the opportunity to see her exhibited work and visit her studio to gain some background into her current series of works that intersect contemporary painting forms with religious subject matter. Several of her works have been exhibited as a finalist in the Blake Prize exploring the religious and spiritual in art.
The ideas she is playing with are rich in evocation and possibility and investigate the manner in which images work in our culture.”
