10th year Anniversary Edition of

Portrait Artists Australia – 2002 – 2012.

The committee is looking into printing quotes for a lovely glossy book of PAA Exhibiting Artists  – allowing two pages per artist for images of works and a short bio. All current, financial members are eligible. This serves to commemorate the 10 years that Portrait Artists Australia has been in existence, and will showcase the artists’ work and the genre itself. It also serves as a promotional tool – for distribution to architects, universities, Tafes, libraries, medical schools. This is our market for high-end commissions. To cover the costs, it is proposed the artists each pay a nominal fee per entry, which will include their own copy of the book; plus we will do a fundraising dinner to cover the rest of the costs. Watch this space for more details during the year.

ARTISTS‘ NEWS

Sinaed Davies: her portrait of Ken Rosewall has been acquired for the collection of the National Portrait Gallery Canberra. This portrait previously hung in the Archibald Refuses 2010.

Also – Sinead participated in a Group ExhibitionDistant Bridges – in support of Amnesty International.

Where: NG Art Gallery, 3 Little Queen St, Chippendale, NSW.

When: 18 Jan – 5 February.

Jodi Stewart: her portrait, Suzanne Chick with her painting ‘Gift from Diego’, which was a finalist in this year’s Portia Geach Award, was one of 18 paintings selected by the DiVerse poet’s group to have an ecphrastic poem written about it.  This is the second year that DiVerse have responded to the Portia Geach exhibition, finding inspiration for their poems in the portraits, a collaboration that implies the multi-layered narratives at work in a skillful portrait. Ann Cape‘s painting, Grace Constanza with her mother, Vera, was also chosen.

Readers will recall that the Grand narrative in Pieter Bruegel’s painting Landscape with the Fall of Icarus inspired the poem (of the same name) by William Carlos Williams; as well as W. H. Auden’s 1938 poem Musée des Beaux-Arts. And the more intimate narrative of the Mona Lisa has inspired songs, movies, and endless conjecture, down the centuries.

Julie Ballis: joint exhibition – Fantasy and Nostalgia.

Where: The Q, 235 Crawford St, Queanbeyan, NSW 2620.

When: 8-26 Feb, Opening 11 Feb 6-8pm by Hon Steve Whan MP.

Robyn Ross: was invited to submit work for the 2011 International Biennale in Izmir, Turkey, and she will be in Turkey this April /May for the opening. (As a ‘guest artist’, the 2,200 Euro exhibit fee is waived). Robyn’s work was selected from an image of one of her drawings from the Florence Biennale Artists’ Exhibition that hung in Melbourne and Canberra galleries in October/November 2010.

OCTOBER EXHIBITION

TITLE: “ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE”

October 2011, ASTRA Gallery in QLD. Dates to be confirmed.

THEME: Cabaret//theatre/street scenes/party/fashion/masquerade/circus.

PORTFOLIO OF PAA ARTISTS

The committee is investigating options to produce a glossy coffee table portfolio of PAA artists and their works as a promotional tool – for distribution to architects, universities, Tafes, libraries, medical schools, and the market for high-end commissions. It is an expensive venture and we looking at several quotes.

SPONSORSHIP and DONATIONS

  • We are also looking for Sponsorship for this venture. A sponsor will receive maximum exposure for their business and LOGO on the publication in return for their contribution.
  • All financial DONATIONS to PAA are tax deductible.
  • We have different levels of sponsorship and ALL assistance is welcome.

THE PAA WEBSITE

The website is getting a lot of visitors and is a powerful tool for marketing, however the entire NET is doing the same thing, so we are looking at ways to make our website prominent. We are also looking at strategies for introducing people to the concept of commissions and to encourage people to follow through with enquiries. We do get a lot of frivolous enquiries, (and some very odd ones), which do not lead to an actual commission, so clearly the interest is there, but the concept of follow-through is not so easy for the general public.

  • a COMMISSIONS link to the information on the PAA Homepage. The page on our website is very friendly and aims to make the process attractive and non-threatening.
  • a FACEBOOK link on the PAA Homepage. Our PAGE ON FACEBOOK is going well and people are using Facebook page as an informal forum or blog, which they cannot do on the PAA website or in the newsletter. This is an opportunity for introducing people to the concept of commissions in the informal and intimate setting, rather than institutional and formal portraits. Please be sure to add the page to your own FACEBOOK page, and to ‘LIKE’ the page. It all helps bring awareness to our association.

THE ANNUAL FEES

Our Honorary Secretary Judith Stevens reminds everyone that the 2011 annual fees are now due. If any artist needs an extension please email Janis. While we need the fees to function, at the same time, an temporary extension, if needed, is always an option. Our very best wishes are with the artists whose studios have suffered damage from the floods.

“THE FACE OF AUSTRALIA”

April 2011, Sydney Parliament House.

THEME: a portrait in the Australian  landscape.

ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE”

October 2011, ASTRA Gallery in QLD.

THEME: Cabaret//theatre/ street scenes/ /party/masquerade/circus – Celebration.

Very best wishes for the Holiday season to the wonderful artists who comprise Portrait Artists Australia…

The year 2010 has seen some interesting developments for PAA – we have had two very successful exhibitions this year – in March FACE-OFF! was a show of close-ups of a uniform small size in a small commercial Gallery; the second, The Artist’s Muse, was an exhibition of full length nude portrait at the Arthouse – a very large commercial multi media Events venue. Next year in 2011 we have two exciting exhibitions ahead – The Face of Australia in Sydney Parliament House, and All the World’s a Stage in QLD. We are already lining up new venues for 2012. The committee is aiming to organise exhibitions in all the states of Australia, and with generous freight sponsorship from Paul Cartwright of Woollahra Art Removals, this is likely to occur.

As an independent professional association we aim to set the standard for top quality, artists-run exhibitions in the genre of contemporary Portraiture, and if our artists continue to give their best to the exhibitions, then PAA will continue to be a strong player in the visual arts industry. The art world needs the energy and vision of independent artists’ initiatives otherwise the artist’s voice will not be heard by the public. The committee is focused on strategies to amplify the profile of Portrait Artists Australia nationally and internationally, and to increase the number of serious commissions.

The Committee Members all work together harmoniously on behalf of the members and every aspect of the Association’s activities is reviewed and discussed. All members of the team bring highly developed skills to the table and are working on behalf of the artists and the art form. Thanks to Judith Stevens for her continuing commitment to PAA in the role of Honorary Secretary – she has recently introduced our new accountant Robert Musumeci, who is auditing and reviewing PAA books. Kathrin Longhurst also gets a special mention for an awesome job with the PAA website. Katherine redesigned the PAA website last year and we are constantly working to improve traffic and create a user friendly, informative site. Last week the site crashed because we had had so many visits that our band-width allowance was exceeded. So now we have increased our band-width capacity in order to accommodate increasing visitors to the site.

PAA is fortunate in attracting ongoing interest from many people and we thank them for their generous support in diverse ways: Craig Peihopa –photography; Paul and Kim at the Artscene; Anthony Longhurst – expert assistance at hangings; Chris Muir –invitation designs; Paul Delprat, our patron; Bruce Thompson – donates printing; and others…

Warmest wishes to you and your families for a joyful and peaceful holiday season, and may 2011 be prosperous for us all,

Janis

Report on the OPENING

The Artist’s Muse

October 2010

The Artist’s Muse opening went extremely well and the guests enjoyed themselves – most people actually voted for Peoples Choice and the box was full. People listened to the speeches instead of chatting through them, and our wonderful guest speaker and esteemed art collector John Schaeffer spoke to all the artists afterwards. The upstairs was closed to the public and the elegant atmosphere supported the strength and beauty of the works. The show will be seen by thousands of people visiting the two rooms during its month-long run. Prices are very reasonable and we hope many of the works will sell.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS: Heartfelt thanks to Craig Peihopa for taking the photos of the event, which will be available to view and to purchase on the website shortly. Thanks to Paul Cartwright of Woollahra Art Removals for interstate freight sponsorship to the depot; and to Kim White at The ArtScene for additional sponsorship of freight to and from the Arthouse venue. Our thanks to Chris Muir for his beautiful invitation design which garnered unprecedented positive feedback. Thanks to the staff at the Arthouse Hotel for excellent service and food at the opening, and Event Manager Alisa Angell.

The PAA Committee is responsible for the PAA events management, from mailouts to catalogues, and special thanks to them all for organizing this exhibition, particularly the hanging team: Kathrin, Jules, Janis, Constance, Rosa, Vivian, who hung the show beautifully, with the help of Anthony Longhurst, who is always so efficient; Nafisa who persuaded John Schaeffer to open.

The show is powerful and one of our best and thank you for your participation and much appreciated. PAA will continue to be a strong artists’ initiative so long as the artists continue to give their best to it – the art world needs the energy and vision of independent artists’ initiatives. The idea of the nude portrait exhibition has proven so popular we might consider doing another one in a similar kind of venue to the Arthouse Hotel, since the theme would not be at all appropriate for the more formal Parliament House venues we also occupy.

WINNER PEOPLE’S CHOICE with an overwhelming 17 votes: Vivian FalkUp Close and Personal”. 2nd place with 11 votes: Christine Lott. Shared 3rd with 10 votes each: Constance Farquharson and Kathrin Longhurst.

Copyright Agency Limited (CAL) will be hosting another series of information sessions on the Australian visual artists’ resale royalty scheme during July, August and September – so if you’re a visual artist, register now to attend these free events.

These information sessions will explain how the scheme works, and how it affects you as an artist. ??CAL has been appointed by the government to administer the scheme, which commenced on 9 June 2010.

The scheme entitles visual artists to receive payment of a 5% royalty on certain resales of their works. It also requires art dealers, galleries, auction houses and Indigenous Art Centres to report certain information about their commercial resales.

You can register to participate in the scheme, and report resales online at www.resaleroyalty.org.au.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

After 3 months of intensive meetings and discussions, the committee has voted on the new (upgraded) LOGO design. Jules Sevelson (who designed our original LOGO back in 2003) presented many variations for consideration, and this was the one we went with – it is striking, simple, easily recognizable, and has a lovely balance of the design components of name, initials and the drawing element which many people had complained dominated the original design, but now is shaped like a mirror image of the ‘P’.

We hope the members are all pleased with the new LOGO and THANK YOU JULES!

We hope the members are all pleased with the new LOGO and THANK YOU JULES!

CONGRATULATIONS TO

Finalists in the 2010 Shirley Hannan Portrait Prize:

Bob Baird, Peter Smeeth, Susie Devenport, Evert Ploeg,

Judge: SMH Art Critic, John McDonald.

2010 Salon des Refuses: Ann Cape (omitted last newsletter)

Kevin Oxley: Finalist: Sunshine Coast Art Prize, 2010 with artwork, “Life Fractals”.

Judge: SMH Art Critic, John McDonald.

Kevin’s wife Kim Oxley writes: “The medium for  ”Life Fractals” is acrylic and collaged miniature digital images showing previous paintings on the theme ”survival against great odds”.  Images of family and drugs create a fractal-style repeat design of samurai armor, as metaphor for shielding and warding off cancer and its grim prognosis. Kevin continues to battle with his health and keeps working regardless of the situation, using the healing power of art as a method of confronting the cancer.

In March 2006 Kevin was told he might have 8 to 12 months to live, but somehow art seems to be giving him time beyond all expectations, so we all support his approach as a positive way of dealing with this crisis.”

Pamela Scherf has had a busy month;

EXHIBITIONS UPDATE – 2011

  • We have successfully negotiated with the director of Astras Gallery (located in the former Schubert Gallery) on the Gold Coast in Queensland to hold an exhibition in October 2011.

Opening night will be Friday 30th September 2011, with the possibility to have artists giving talks over the weekend. Sponsorship for the event will ensure good rates for hotel accommodation for PAA members, as well as freight sponsorship. The gallery offers a huge space with a white baby grand piano, so we will have a lovely opening night, on a theme to be announced shortly. We will make the theme general, to attract sales and commissions. Kathrin Longhurst is responsible for this exciting new venue for PAA artists. The Gallery has agreed to put up a $10,000 incentive prize for the people’s choice or judges pick, yet to be decided – watch this space.

  • The Face Of Australiain April 2011 at Sydney Parliament House. (The theme is a portrait in the Australian landscape.) In this work PAA artists have the opportunity to incorporate the Australian landscape as well as a portrait in the painting. The Parliament House is a venue a perfect setting for a celebration of the people and the land. Open to all PAA exhibiting members.

PAA will take the whole Fountain Court exhibition area, which leaves a lot of walls for LARGE paintings incorporating the Australian landscape – sea, desert, farms, hills, coast…anything.  The portrait can be of anyone at all as well as any celebrity the artists can approach. This theme is easy to market to the media, as it incorporates our land and the people who love it. We will have floor talks by the artists for this exhibition. Sydney Parliament House is a beautiful venue with a lot of local and international visitors

COMMITTEE REPORT

¨       ANNOUNCEMENT: FREIGHT SPONSORSHIP – We are delighted to announce that Woollahra Art Removals, art specialists, has entered into an ongoing relationship with PAA to sponsor freight for interstate artists for the PAA exhibitions. Since most of our exhibitions have been held in NSW this is welcome news for our artists in VIC, OLD and NT. However, we are looking at exhibition venues in Brisbane and Melbourne for 2012, so the sponsorship will then apply to NSW members. PAA is a national professional association of artists and we would like ALL our members to be able to participate in one or both of the annual exhibitions. The freight charge will not be a deterrent for the next two exhibitions, October 2010 at the Arthouse Hotel and April 2011 at the Sydney Parliament House for interstate members.

¨       LOGOJules Sevelson is currently working on upgrading the PAA Logo, with a greater emphasis on the name and initials in the design. Jules and the folk on the committee have been discussing these changes for the last few meetings and we should be able to launch this design next month on the website and the letterhead. Watch this space….

¨       ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING1st SEPTEMBER, 7pm – 8.30pm at the JAAS at Artists Colony Middle Head, Mosman/Sydney. ALL MEMBERS ARE URGED TO ATTEND THE AGM. Members are invited to turn up at 6.30 for drinks and light food and to catch up with other members. Those unable to attend may send their proxy voting form to Janis, Kathrin, Nafisa, or another member to vote on your behalf. The proxy form will be in the August Newsletter.

The AGM Agenda will include voting on a proposed amendment to the PAA Constitution and voting on the committee members for the next 12 months. The books will be presented for inspection. Paul Delprat has once again generously offered the Julian Ashton Art School premises for the meeting, there is ample free parking and a spectacular view of the harbour.

PS: PAA hosts 4 social events per year – the AGM mid year; the Arty Party in January; and the 2 x Opening Nights of our exhibitions. These are great times to meet and/or catch up with fellow artists.

¨       A NOTE FROM JUDITH STEVENS – PAA HONORARY SECRETARY

“Thank you to all those PAA artists who have been so prompt with their annual membership fee this year. Just a reminder to the few members who have not yet sent in their cheque  – fees are now due for 2010, and our accountant is due to audit the books for the year prior to the AGM. PAA depends on these fees to continue functioning, and they cover our on-going costs for the exhibitions, the advertising, the mailouts, the opening nights, freight, as well as your inclusion in the PAA website. Happy painting to all, kind regards, Judith.

NOTE – Australia’s newest portraiture competition – the City of Perth Black Swan Prize for Portraiture. Entry form is due Friday 16th July 2010 and final selection is via photographs of your artwork.

In 2010 the Lester Group 1st prize has increased to $30,000 (non-acquisitive), and the special Perrine People’s Choice Prize of $7,500 will once again cause great debate amongst visitors to the exhibition.

REPORT: Face Off!

We had a big blast at the MLC Gallery for the jam-packed Opening Night of Face Off! This is the first exhibition PAA has held at a small commercial gallery and it was a great success. Apologies to those in the street who were unable to hear the speeches – we had arranged for the sound guy to affix a second speaker on the gallery doorway facing the street and he did not comply.

This is the first time that the PAA artists have painted specifically for a PAA show – owing to the restricted brief on this occasion – and we can be very pleased with the strength and variety of the works. PAA artists and their guests enjoyed the event (some from Brisbane and Melbourne) and the vibe of this show was as hip and urban as we wished. Paul Delprat spoke brilliantly and commended the passion of the artists.

Thank you to the MLC Gallery (Miriam and Garrett) for sponsoring this exhibition. Thanks to Chris Muir for the invitation design and Francesca Trochei (catering) and her catering staff who handled the crowded room so efficiently. Craig Peihopa was there to take photos of it all which Kathrin has uploaded onto the website to view – you can download in small format or they can be purchased in high format directly from Craig.

Thanks to the creative Committee who make all these shows happen, special mention to Jules for the catchy title of the show, to Nafisa for coming up with the idea of same size format which works so well in the small venue, and to Janis and Kathrin who hung the show and organized the logistics.

Congratulations to:

Susie Devenport  &

Penelope Gilbert Ng

who jointly won the People’s Choice Award.

Q & A: The Artist’s Muse: Why this theme and what does it mean?

1. Why Nudes? – for this exhibition we are painting the NUDE figure (the whole figure or the ¾  figure; partially draped or undraped; in order to demonstrate the mastery of anatomy – hands, feet, parts of the body – in the context of a themed composition.

2. The work MUST at the same time be a portrait – a recognisable likeness of a person (so it is NOT a figure study, it is a portrait.)

3. The work must address the THEME of the Artist’s Muse – in other words address what you as an artist regard as inspirational – whatever that means for you.

4. Nafisa has offered to act as a CONTACT for artists who are having trouble finding a subject to sit for a nude portrait – call her on 0404 136 303.

5. Artists may enter one or two works, PAA will sponsor the freight for our Interstate artists for this exhibition.
