ANGELIKA ERBSLAND —BIOGRAPHY
I was born in Germany in 1951 and migrated to Adelaide in 1955. I have been painting and drawing since childhood, and my passion was always to draw people.
In 1983, after studying for an associate diploma at the North Adelaide School of Art and Craft [ Tafe], majoring in painting, life drawing and ceramics. I won the school painting prize and was offered work teaching for Tafe, in painting and ceramics.
I established myself as a portrait artist and painted politicians, sports people and well known Adelaide identities. In 1993 I won the Packer’s award at the Archibald with a portrait of Colin Hayes and his favourite racehorse. I was then also commissioned to paint many other famous racehorses and jockeys.
My watercolour portraits were hung in the Alice Bale exhibition a few times.
I had several solo and group exhibitions in Adelaide featuring landscape and figurative work, using several different media. I still enjoy using watercolours, oils, acrylics and pastels.
In 1995 I relocated to Sydney, and have had several group and solo exhibitions.
Since 1983 I have won 21 first prizes and 36 second and other prizes in various regional shows both in NSW and S.A.
I have been teaching painting and drawing at the Castle Hill Art society since 1997 and I conduct demonstrations and workshops in Sydney, interstate and overseas
I regularly paint portrait commissions in various media. I like to paint from life when possible, but can also work from photographs. When working from life, there are usually about 4 sittings and included in that are sketches and photo references.
I have weekender at Hill End complete with studio where I often go to paint, and also take students for workshops.
My work has been privately collected in Germany, South Australia and Sydney.
