Nafisa Naomi: solo exhibition titled “Regeneration”Â

Nafisa’s prize winning Portrait of Lewis Morley (2008 Black Swan Prize for Portraiture) was at the Artarmon Galleries for the duration of the exhibition.
Rosa Fidele: has completed several portraits recently: Tim Freedman of The Whitlams and Nabil Gazal, businessman and patriarch of the Gazal family. Rosa will once again donate a portrait sitting – to be auctioned at the 2008 Sydney Breast Cancer Pink Ball.

GENERAL NEWS

REPORT: on the Open Day at the MIDDLEHEAD Artists Colony, Mosman NOV 2nd (where Ann Cape and Nafisa Naomi have studios and there is a branch of the Julian Ashton Art School.)

PAA artists set up easels under the PAA banner in the gallery/amphitheatre space, talked with the throng of visitors to the colony and made drawings of those brave enough to sit for the artists.

Present were Pamela Irving; Janis Lander; Charles Plisek; Rizwana Ahmed (who drove from Camden); Julie Ballis (who drove from Canberra); and Paul Delprat who joined us for a while – the view across the harbour to the South Head was spectacular.

REPORT ON THE 2008 ANNUAL EXHIBITION THE ART OF HEALING.

Huge opening night, big crush and many thanks to the fabulous PAA Committee for all their hard work in organizing this annual event! Chris O’Brien was unable to make it on Opening Night and he was replaced by Dr Kerwin Shannon, Director, Sydney Head & Neck Cancer Institute, who spoke eloquently about the remarkable research conducted by the Insititute.

This was our sixth Annual Exhibition at the Arthouse, and as an ARTISTS’ INITIATIVE we are going strong. Please bear in mind we have 3 exhibitions lined up for 2009 and 3 more the following year. So keep painting and sculpting and drawing and contributing wonderful art to these shows!!!

The result of the VOTES for People’s Choice: Winner – Jules Sevelson, (three votes ahead of Robyn Ross and five votes ahead of Kathrin Longhurst and Kevin Oxley.)

Thanks to the Hanging Team for a superb job – the Cocktail Bar downstairs had a line-up of exquisite small pieces, many people remarked on the overall high quality of the exhibition.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Fellow Artists + Friends of Portrait Artists Australia,

This past year has held some exciting moments and memorable events for a number of us. Many of us have had travel opportunities leading to exploring new themes for our own practice, whilst forging new friendships with like minds on the journey.

Our recent themed show The Art of Healing recognized and celebrated the careers of people working in health care. It is a reflection on the participating artists that the ArtHouse Hotel noted record numbers returning for second viewings throughout the run of the show. The People’s Choice Award was popular and will be a regular feature in future exhibitions. Congratulations to Jules Sevelson, whose painting “Getting to the Bottom of Things” attracted the most votes.

The holiday season is fast approaching so now is the time to consider those friends and family in celebration. If you do have any spare time between other commitments, painting loved ones is the perfect entry for the Doug Moran and the Shirley Hannan portrait prizes. As PAA is having a couple of themed shows in 2009, consider your subjects for the dual purpose of the Archibald circus and the PAA Parliament House Exhibitions – keeping in mind our Opening Nights in NSW on April 1st and in Canberra on September 1st.

We are aiming to enjoy a record gathering of PAA members and friends on January 22nd at the ArtHouse Hotel for Australia Day drinks. This will be a chance to catch up with each other and PAA will be subsidising the tickets, so please consider joining us and bring your sketch books as we are theming it around the “Artist’s Muse”- thus a nude model will be in attendance, just to keep the creative juices flowing… prizes during the night for drawings, awarded by mystery guest judge.

ARTISTS’ NEWS

Avril Thomas reports: “I have some exciting news as a direct result of the images I have done for the Art of Healing exhibition. I have really enjoyed this project, as I was a nurse in my last life (pre full-time practicing artist). A painting will be on its way to Sydney, but the drawings done of the theatre scene have been snapped up/bought by the orthopaedic surgeon for his rooms. And now I am in negotiations for a residency at Flinders Hospital as an artist. They have a huge project on there using art as an adjunct to healing.”

Alex Kolozsy: Has completed the restoration of Merrylands RSL Soldiers. Short-listed in June, he clean restore, and in places re-sculpture the figures with new patina sealed with silicon wax. On Friday 19th September a team of workers helped to lift and secure the restored sculptures on site at the front of the Merrylands RSL where they now stand in all their glory.

Jiawei Shen: portrait of Hon. David Hawker, former Speaker, commissioned by the government in last year, was unveiled in the Parliament House in Canberra 3rd Sept. 2008

Jiawei was unable to attend as he was in the USA and Malaysia for 6 weeks with his wife Lan and fellow artist Wang Xu to attend 2 x Opening Nights. Two works – a large history painting MEDERKA, together with an earlier work THE THIRD WORLD (2002), is on exhibit in the Galeri Petronas of Malaysia in the twin towers in Kuala Lumpur 31 Aug – 12 Oct. 2008. Two other works: STANDING GUARD FOR OUR GREAT MOTHERLAND (1974) and CLIMBING OVER THE GREAT SNOW MOUNTAIN (1977) participated the exhibition: Art And China’s Revolution in the Asia Society Museum in New York 4 Sep 2008 – 11 Jan 2009.

Paul Jackson has 2 paintings featured in a book titled New Zealand Portraits released this month by Penguin Books, written by Richard Wolf.

Reviews may be found online: the Christchurch Press – Wed 24th Sept and the New Zealand Herald – Sat 27th Sept. As an NZ expatriate two of his Archibald works will be featured: Garry McDonald – All the world’s a stage… which won the ‘people’s choice’ in 2006 in Sydney and Melbourne, and his 2004 Self portrait with the last Huia. One of the works from Paul’s recent portrait exhibition in Christchurch is the featured on the cover of NZ Artzone Magazine (also online).

ARTISTS’ NEWS.

Pamela Irving’s sensitive and beautiful tonal study in oils of Moses Kaman Maina (1980-2008) is currently hanging in the Members’ Lounge at the Art gallery of NSW. Moses was much loved by many Sydney artists as a sometime model, and also the AGS Café’s Barista, and died in August in a drowning accident. A memorial fund has allowed Moses to be flown to Kenya so that ‘he may be put to rest according to family custom’. There will be a memorial service Wednesday September 17. Check with the AGNSW Society for details.

Opening Night of the ART OF HEALING will be well-attended by artists and their subjects, so it will be a good time to catch up with old friends: Kevin & Kim Oxley report: “we will be flying from QLD for the opening with some friends, artists George Hatsatouris and Robert Wilson. Kevin is submitting two portraits of GPs. Dr. Michael Pelmore and Dr. Greg Wren, who will also join us for the opening.

We will also be inviting senior retired physician Dr. Con Reed who was recently awarded an O.A.M. Kevin has been battling pancreatic cancer, but is currently in remission and has been painting some outstanding portraits in the last few months, since his Retrospective Exhibition at the Caloundra Regional Gallery in April 2008.”

Nafisa Naomi is painting Dr Middleton, a gastroenterologist at Royal North Shore Hospital, and the good doctor and his wife are flying all the way from Hong Kong for the opening night.

COMMITTEE REPORT:

There was a lively debate at the August committee meeting regarding some applications from artists who rely on photographic transfers as the matrix for their paintings. This means that digital images are printed onto a canvas support, and then some paint is added over the photograph.

“The members of the committee feel strongly that this kind of work, while interesting, does not in any way represent the artistic aims of Portrait Artists Australia. PAA artists are able to work spontaneously from life, and use such drawings and studies as the matrix for a fully developed painting or sculpture. A strategic use of photographic reference material does not in any way supplant these fundamental skills. It is our intention that our exhibitions demonstrate knowledge of these traditional skills. Even though all styles and conceptual approaches are welcome – classical, expressionist, surrealist or impressionist – we feel strongly that fundamental painting and drawing skills must be maintained

“Regarding applications for exhibiting membership, the committee needs to be convinced that the artist can draw and paint from life. We wish to be reassured that the work is not photographs manipulated in photoshop, printed onto a canvas, and then coloured over. Such work would be shown to greater advantage in a photographic based group working with digital and video art.”

Raelene Sharp: commissioned to paint Professor Fred Mendelsohn MD PhD FRACP FAA AO. Professor Mendelsohn is Director of the Howard Florey Institute University of Melbourne and the R.Douglas Wright Professor of Experimental Physiology and Medicine at the University of Melbourne since 1997. He was elected to the Australian Academy of Science in 2003 and received the Order of Australia, Officer in the General Division, in 2004.

Rossmore James Campbell: is currently working, living and painting in the Silver town of Taxco, Mexico, completing studies in Silversmithing. While there he is painting a new collection of Mexican works for exhibition in Mexico and later in Australia.

Robyn Ross: is judging an art exhibition devoted to Breast Cancer Research. Artists and others have been invited to submit work expressing experiences relating to family or friend who has had Breast Cancer. ALSO Robyn is Guest speaker at the Marist Missions Australia Charity Ball and judging art works exhibited by young people in the programme “Moving Towards The ART of Independence”

He has developed the therapies and technology that have saved countless lives.

Jules Sevelson is painting astro-physicist Professor Bryan Gaensler, who has been lecturer at Sydney University School of Physics for 37 years.

27 July – George Gittoes: will be talking about the Yellow House and how from this early stage of his art he agreed with Picasso’s maxim “I do not seek, I find.” He will explain the influence of Islamic art on his work since high school and how bridges can be built through cultural activity between the Islamic and Western understanding. He will allow the audience to view original diaries.
31 August – Lucy Culliton: Demonstration – some still life painting.
28 September – Patrick Carroll: Will discuss the vagaries of launching a concept exhibition and will refer directly to three concept shows that he has put together over the last seven years.

Report: The 2008 Annual General Meeting:

There were 17 PAA members present at the AGM and 10 proxy forms. Judith Stevens read out the financial report. Robyn Ross read the president’s report. All present voted on the election of committee members. Minutes were taken and votes were counted by Judith Stevens, Honorary Secretary.

Executive positions on the committee will be decided at the next Committee meeting end of June. Robyn Ross announced that after two years in the position, she will not stand for President due to health considerations. The committee thanked Robyn for her excellent work on behalf of our members, and her generous and enthusiastic presence.

The SHEAR FACES Portrait Competition (acquisitive): “invites artists and photographers to record and interpret the characters who work in Australia’s toughest profession… people doing a range of tasks under the most difficult conditions.”
VENUE: SHEAR OUTBACK, the national Shearers’ Hall of Fame at Hay in NSW, as part of a 2008 program including the National Shearing Championships in November.
NOTE: for city-based artists without rural links SHEAR OUTBACK will coordinate and assist artists and photographers to establish rural contacts: providing an introduction to shearing sheds on sheep stations on the saltbush plains of pastoral Australia at no cost.

Louise Beck: On April 2 at a dinner at Government House her portrait of Lloyd McDermott (the first Aboriginal Barrister and the first Aboriginal Wallaby in Australia) was auctioned for $5000. Louise writes: “At the same dinner I was commissioned to paint a portrait of the three Ella Brothers titled Masters of Rugby. My head is still spinning!”

Kerry McInnis: Solo Exhibition – Chasm – Landscape paintings in response to many excursions into the fascinating gorges of NT, QLD, and NSW.

Kevin Oxley, one of our Queensland members, originally from Sydney, sends his regards to all PAA members. Kevin is a painter, printmaker and musician, and is being honoured with a retrospective exhibition of his work, spanning four decades, including oils, watercolours. charcoals, etchings, sculptures.

Where: Coloundra Regional Gallery, 22 Omrah Ave., Caloundra, Qld.

When: 20th April – 1st June, 2008
Opening: April 20th at 2pm – by Susan McCulloch, Author of “Encyclopedia Of Australian Artists” who is flying up from Melbourne to open the show. A 20-minute DVD on Kevin’s Life and Art will be previewed on the night. The producer: Michael Berry, free-lance documentary maker (ex-ABCTV, producer for Hypotheticals).

Kevin writes: “My health has had a profound affect on my work as I battle with liver cancer. I am still working while regularly having tumours removed. A sense of urgency has probably brought forward the honour of the invitation to stage this next show which covers four decades of my work. My website, oxleyart.com shows my last exhibition on the theme of Noahs’ Ark as a metaphor for survival and drawing on the “inner warrior”. The exhibition of 64 works sold out completely, at prices ranging from $12,000 for large works down to $300 for small etchings, so the market is very much alive up here in the Sunshine Coast.”

Robyn Ross: has been commissioned by the Sydney University Foundation to paint a portrait of Emeritus Professor Stuart Truswell – faculty of Microbiology.

As well Robyn has three portrait commissions from Lucca, Italy, resulting from the Florence Biennale. During the Biennale Exhibition, 5 panels of her large work were sold – four of them will go to London, the other one stays in Italy. Robyn has had a health crisis since her return from Italy, so this is great news.

CONGRATULATIONS TO

Nafisa Naomi: awarded 1st Prize For Painting in the 2007 Florence Biennale. She was voted by the panel the Best of 800 artists across 62 countries. Nafisa commented that she ‘felt very patriotic’. A feature article about this award appeared in The Australian – December 27, 2007.

Suzanne Warwick: awarded ‘Best painting in show’, the 29th Annual Art Exhibition in Kiama – for portrait of daughter Lara with cat Boo. 3 of her paintings were selected for the 2007 Lexus Mortimore Prize.

Pamela Irving: finalist: Eutick Memorial Still Life Award at the Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery.

Janne Kearney: finalist in the Whyalla Art prize.

Maurice Schlesinger: His abstract metal sculpture “Let’s Dance” has just won the Sculptors Society prize at the Society’s annual Darling Park exhibition. Held in December 2007 at Darling Park building, 201 Sussex Street, City. Over 200 sculptures on display, open 7 days week. Maurice comments that his first year as a student at the National Art School continues to bring him unexpected rewards.

Raelene Sharp: Book Launch & Exhibition. 

When & Where: Held on 14th December, 2007, it was a great success. The traveling portrait exhibition was also hung again along with the book launch for the weekend. The Exhibition was packed up and sent to Bundaberg Qld and will be there for a few weeks before continuing on in regional galleries in Victoria. The book can be ordered via Fusionsix.net web site.

Avril Thomas: Solo Exhibition – with an unveiling of the portrait of Premier Mike Rann, plus retrospective works.

Rosa Fedele advises: “On Monday 7th January, one of my paintings was stolen from its home in a suburb of inner western Sydney! Nothing else was taken! It was reported to the police and so now, we wait!” Anyone with news please contact Rosa at 0425 277 441.

Constance Farquharson: is painting the children of Sir John Rendall, the famous conservationist depicted in the film “A Lion called Christian” in the 1970′s. A painting of Sir John is to follow.

Eva Herz-Murray: commissioned by the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron to paint icon Gordon Ingate, who represented Australia in the Helsinki Olympics. The completed portrait will hang in the squadron headquarters.

REPORT ON ‘BEST FRIEND’ EXHIBITION, 2007.

A great Annual show, reflecting well on the quality and energy of our association. Paul Delprat made an hilarious speech on opening night, engaging directly with many of the paintings, and urging all present to rush immediately to commission a portrait. In fact many people did inquire seriously about the process and two sales were negotiated on the night. (Thanks to Kathrin Longhurst and Doffy White who have both sent PAA the 10% commission for their sales.)

REQUEST FOR DONATIONS OF ARTWORK: Students from the University of Western Sydney are organising an art exhibition to raise money for the Australian Literacy & Numeracy Foundation. More information can be found on the UWS website.

Where/When: There will be two exhibitions. The first is held on 30 May 2008 at UWS Parramatta Campus in the Ian Turbott Auditorium. The second exhibition runs from 7-9TH June 2008 at Beach Art Gallery in Thirroul. The project is establishing a literacy tutoring program in Western Sydney and targets new migrants from African and Afghani backgrounds in Years 7-11.

Chairs for Charity auction on 13th October 2007 in Melbourne.

Proceeds from the auction of chairs are shared between Make A Wish Australia, the Australian Drug Foundation and the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The Auction & Dinner in Melbourne was attended by several PAA artists and the PAA artists raised $18,000 between them.

Hard to believe how quickly this year has gone. In March the POWER IN THE HOUSE exhibition at Parliament House in Sydney was a huge success, with media coverage on Channel 10, ABC radio, and the Sydney Morning Herald. The Best Friend exhibition in November promises to be equally successful. Please remember to send in your entry forms by early November…

Portrait Artists Australia is very much a team effort and many opportunities arise for our committee members to gently publicize our activities to the public and to the media. Special Thanks to Jules Sevelson who has streamlined PAA Logos, letterheads and exhibition labels, and designed our latest invitation, as well as sending out media releases. To our wonderful honorary secretary Judith Stevens who has donated so many hours and so much energy to PAA business whilst running her full-time costume design business. To the Newsletter Team Janis Lander (editor) Constance Farquharson (in charge of mailout) and Jeanette Korduba (who donates the printing). To our web co-ordinators Kathrin Longhurst and Janis Lander. Also thanks to Alex Koloszy for his efforts as PAA liaison officer for the exhibitions in the two Parliament Houses. And thanks to all the volunteers who help with the various tasks associated with organizing Exhibitions, without them these events would not happen.

Warmest wishes to all our wonderful PAA artists, and congratulations on a very productive year, with many artists selected for national and regional exhibitions. We hope the future sees members Australia wide active in promoting & realising opportunities for exhibitions by Portrait Artists Australia across the nation. We have a great 2008 to look forward to. Vivian Falk & Nafisa Naomi: Finalists in the 2007 Willoughby Art Prize

Nafisa Naomi: has completed her Masters of Fine Arts at the National Art School after two and a half years’ work. Her work, comprising 120 portraits in oils on 3-D boxes plus 3 large autobiographical panels, filled the Gallery space of Block 25 at the National Art School in Darlinghurst.

It attracted a large crowd during the
short time it was on view from 19th – 21st September. Nafisa will be exhibiting in the Florence Biennale in December 2007

ARTISTS’ NEWS

David Rees: a longtime automobile enthusiast, David has begun a commission of three life-size paintings, sanctioned by Mercedes Benz. The first painting is a 1938 model Grand Prix Mercedes; the second is a 1955 Gull-Wing Mercedes; the third is a portrait of Greg Sanderson, of Mercedes Benz, seated in his mint-condition 300 SL 1959 Mercedes.

After completing this commission, David will commence a life-size series for Lamborghini of their early models. In his spare time and for his own pleasure, David has recently painted an Elvis impersonator seated in a vintage pink Edsell Ford. David’s witty paintings of vehicular transport, are meticulous in detail and prized by collectors around the world.

Dr. Alex Sandor Kolozsy: is giving a Master Class, during which he will sculpt Tom Bass. 

When: 1.30 – 4.30pm, starting on the 29th September, each Saturday afternoon for five weeks.
Where: Tom Bass Sculpture Studio School, Sydney.

Janis Lander: presented a research paper titled Spiritual Narratives in Images of Land – Cross Cultural Influences In Contemporary Australian Land-Based Art in September at the ILIRI Symposium Re-Cognising the Land, held at Fowler’s Gap, the UNSW semi-arid Research Station out near Broken Hill.

The inter-disciplinary Symposium was hosted by the College of Fine Arts UNSW, and was attended by a group of artists, architects, Indigenous elders and academics to discuss issues relating to the land both from indigenous and non-indigenous perspectives.

We’d like to encourage all our wonderful PAA members to acknowledge the hard work of the committee in promoting our artists on the website and by other means, by giving a tiny percentage of any commission generated by Portrait Artists Australia. This includes commissions whereby the sitter has located the artist on the PAA website and then contacted the artist directly. When the artist says: “How did you find out about me?” and the sitter replies, “Oh, I found you on the PAA website”, then the commission comes back to the Source. Please be fair….
